Those who do much serious image editing value a combination of power, video and a multiple drive combination. A good video card is a must and most definitely your at an advantage if you have a high quality Quadro FX card. Almost as important is the ability to have large amounts of hard drive storage space with a large monitor with a high resolution) The drives should have plenty of space and have a high bandwidth. Most important for drives is that you have one drive for the program to run on and another drive for the file to be edited on. This drive is called the scratch or temp drive. The best overall option is to have three drives total. two drives striped together under RAID 0 and the third drive should be a standalone drive for your scratch drive. Another valuable feature is being able to read flash memory cards. CD-RW's and DVD-RW's make large hard drive a little less necessary since you can archive photos for later use without tying up large volumes of disk space. Few laptops can excel at every one of these areas, so you generally choose the features mentioned that are the most important to your needs. The three systems that can accomplish all these tasks are the D9F, M9800 and the M8700. The D9F has the power, along with a variety of input ports. A tie for the best laptop is the M9800 because it has the largest monitor which makes up for the loss of the desktop i7 CPU, it also shares the same three drive option which is a huge advantage. The third option is the M8700. It has the same power as the M9800, the same screen size as the D9F and it can use two drives for the minimum configuration needed to consider a laptop for professional image editing use.
